The first recorded settler in Plainfield was James Walker, who arrived in 1828. The village was originally known as Walkers' Grove. In 1834, the name was changed to Plainfield after Dr. Elijah Wentworth from Vermont suggested that it would be a good name for the village since it was located in such a flat area.
